The story revolves around the player and a small ragtag group of racers waiting to be noticed by any of the game’s five icons, all of them being real-world motorsport and street racing figures.

There are two storylines that the player can choose to play by: the Racer storyline and the Cop storyline. Upon completion of a certain number of sets of goals, the storyline moves forward, earning the player new cars in the process.

Hot Pursuit’s gameplay is set in the fictional Seacrest County, an open world in which players can compete in several types of races. Players can also compete onlin, which includes additional game modes as “Hot Pursuit”, “Interceptor” and “Race”.

The game begins where a former street racer known as Ryan Cooper enters a challenge day and wins it with a Nissan 240SX. Ryan is mocked by Ryo Watanabe, the Showdown King who drives a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

In The Run, players will participate in an “underground world of illicit, high stakes racing,” in a race from San Francisco to New York, with stops through Las Vegas, Denver, Detroit, and many other locations, making it the first title in the series to use real locations.
